The following is a report of the taste test conducted in response to this earlier post.

Introduction

The purpose of this experiment was to compare the taste of Rice Krispies Treats and Little Debbie Marshmallow Treats in order to include or disallow Little Debbie Marshmallow Treats as a viable substitute for Rice Krispies Treats in David’s lunch.  This was determined using a blind taste test.

Materials and Methods

The taste test was performed using a blindfold, and two samples of Rice Krispies Treats and Little Debbie Marshmallow Treats.  The treats were cut into identical shapes and sizes.  The participant was blindfolded and offered the samples in the following order:  Rice Krispies Treat Sample 1, Little Debbie Marshmallow Treat Sample 1, Little Debbie Marshmallow Treat Sample 2 and Rice Krispies Treat Sample 2.

The Taste Test

Results

The participant was able to accurately identify the brand of each sample tasted.

Discussion

While the participant was able to accurately identify the brand of each sample tasted, the particpant acknowledged the similiarity in taste.  He concluded that he would not have been able to distinguish the brands if he hadn’t been on a “Rice Krispies Treat Bender” prior to the test.  His recent consumption of the Rice Krispies Treats may have had an effect on the test results.

A secondary goal of this experiment was to prove the theory of David’s Lunch Likeability Law of Perception which states:  The likeability of items in David’s lunch are determined based upon David’s perception of the food item, rather than by actual taste.  Given the results, it may be determined that David’s Lunch Likeability Law of Perception holds up.

Finally, a benefit-cost analysis of the Rice Krispies Treats and the Little Debbie Marshmallow Treats suggest that Little Debbie Marshmallow Treats are not only a reasonable substitute, but should be considered as a replacement for Rice Krispies Treats in David’s lunch.  The Rice Krispies Treats can be purchased for the cost of $2.65 while the same amount of Little Debbie Marshmallow Treats could be purchased for $1.39.  Since the taste comparision analysis revealed a negligible difference, it is recommended that Little Debbie Marshmallow Treats be used in place of Rice Krispies Treats when possible.

Conclusion

Little Debbie Marshmallow Treats may be used as a substitute for Rice Krispies treats in David’s lunch.
