ROTFL

by Leslie

“Dave, what is R-O-T-F-L?”

“It means ‘rolling on the floor laughing.’ You didn’t know that?”

“Rolling on the floor laughing. Really? Do you think people are really rolling on the floor laughing when they write that? Actually, they don’t even write it. They abbreviate it or acronyze it or something. I think they’re just exaggerating. I’ve only rolled on the floor laughing two, maybe three times. And it was in response to a stinker. Everytime.”

“I believe that. Where is that music coming from?”

“Julia’s play room. She’s been digging into my old CD’s. You know, I better go peek in at her, make sure she’s not into trouble…”

1 minute later…

“Um, Dave? You better come look at this.”

“What? What is it?”

“Your daughter is naked, dancing on her window seat. To one of my old Christian rock CD’s.”

“Now that’s a blog post.”

“Yeah. I should call it ROTFL.”

“But we’re not.”

“Nobody really does.”

“Call it SSSA: Standing Still Slightly Amused.”

“I prefer the irony of ROTFL.”

“Call it NWD: Naked Window Dancing.”

“NWDFG: Naked Window Dancing For God.”

“Do you think God likes NWD?”

“Yeah. He’s probably ROTFL.”

Our Dutch Cupbaord

Our house isn’t filled with many items of great monetary value, but this is one of them - our Dutch Cupboard. My mother acquired it when she was 14 years old. Her grandmother had bought a house with the cupboard inside - it had belonged to the former owner’s grandmother. Neither the former owner nor my great-grandmother wanted the cupboard, but my mom did. It has lived with me in every house I’ve ever known and is one of those items that made each house home because, to me, that cupboard is my mother. Simple and elegant, with the wear of life only adding to it’s grace and beauty.

It seems that the cupboard draws aged items to it. The Yosemite Sam cookie jar, the Smilie Face set and the crockery bowl sitting on top of the cupboard are all vintage pieces, too. The bowl belonged to my great-grandmother. There are worn places around the edge of it where she used to sharpen her cooking knife; somehow those grooves carved into stone hold more of her memory than any photograph I own of her.

Isn’t it amazing how inanimate objects can possess so much life?

Please, don’t forget to enter the Share Your Stories Of Love Contest for a chance to win a mug and tote from My Mommy’s Place and a custom embroidered item of your choice from Sweetie Pie Hats! Then, head over to enter the Mom Idol Online Singing Contest. Be sure to vote for the song you’d like to hear me enter, too.

We live next to a large barn used by the neighboring farm to house their cattle in the winter.

Today, we noticed that one of the cows had gotten out of the fenced area around the barn and was wandering, rather sliding, around on ice. The cow was pretty upset, which made the other cows upset and they started running and back and forth inside the fenced area. It was mayhem.

I quickly called the neighbor as we watched out the window at the unfolding drama. The farmer showed up and startled the cow who JUMPED OVER THE FENCE and back inside.

The whole family roared with shock and amazement. We’d never seen a cow jump like that! Over a fence that was taller than the cow! Then Julia reminded us, “Well, the cow jumped over the moon.” As if to say, “Duh Mother. If cows can jump over moons, fences are pretty small potatoes.”

Oh, how I wish I’d grabbed my camera. It was absolutely amazing. Renegade, break-out, jumping cows.

The fabulous Faith from SpiderWeb Dreams was the winner of The Quiz Show Quizzes, adding weight to my surmisal that we were best friends in a former life. Her prize: a haiku. Here it is.

A girl that has rats
And anti-resolutions
I’m caught in her web

I’ve heard people say that blogs are like conversations. If any blog I read is like that, it is Faith’s. Her writing feels like it’s coming straight from her heart and onto my screen. When I click over to her site, I feel like I’m opening a letter written just for me - a letter that would begin, “Dear Friend.” If you haven’t visited Faith before, click on over today and get caught in her spiderweb for a while, too.

Then, be sure to check out the Mom Idol Singing Contest! Yes! An on-line singing contest for moms! My Mommy’s Place is a sponsor - how could we not be? We’re offering up a mug, a tote bag and an iTunes giftcard, but that’s not all - there are tons of other great sponsors offering prizes I know you’ll want to win. Prizes will be awarded to some of the best and some of the worst singers, and if you’re not one of those, you still have a chance to win the random drawing! So, click the link to learn how to enter. You know I’ll be entering. In fact, I could use your help! I don’t know what to sing! Click here to vote on the song I should record and enter into the contest. I’ll keep the poll up for a week and announce the song you chose next Friday, February 23rd and that’s the one I’ll enter into the contest.

The White Out

by Leslie

A snowstorm hit yesterday. Julia and I woke to the sight of snow-covered cows and fields and a haze of white drifting downward. Next came a phone call from the library saying, “Story Time has been cancelled due to weather conditions.”

We flipped on the weather and sat by the window to watch the local traffic slip and slide along the road while we ate Pink Heart-Shaped Rice Kripsies Treats for breakfast. (It’s cereal. It counts as breakfast.) Then, we called Dave at work and begged him to very carefully come straight home as the weatherman was telling us it was going to get worse and only crazy people would be out driving in the storm of the year.

Once Dave was safely home and covered with kisses, he sat down to check his e-mail. Then, four words I fear more than global warming echoed from the next room, “We have no internet.”

I ran to my computer and switched it on - I had to check this out for myself. I waited impatiently for the 3 minute boot up to finish. Hands shaking, I clicked on the internet icon. He was right! There is no connection. “David! We have no internet!”

It was then that the panic hit me. I jumped up and ran in circles. “No internet! No internet! No internet! How will I do my banking? How will I check my e-mail? WHY DIDN’T I BLOG FIRST THING THIS MORNING!?! I just know something important is happenening out there and I’m missing it. I’M MISSING IT!”

I sat back down at the computer and frantically tapped buttons and clicked the mouse. “This can’t be. This can’t be. Come on!”

Dave had to grab me by the shoulders and shake me hard while Julia slapped me across the face to end the freak out. After a short hour or two of clutching my knees to my chest and rocking in the corner, I developed a sense of calm about the whole thing and said, “Well then. Let’s go play in the snow!”

And we did.

Did we ever. Really. We played in the snow like people have never played in the snow before. We rode Julia’s new purple sled down the hill in a variety of combinations: Julia and Mommy, Mommy, Daddy and Julia, Mommy, Mommy and Daddy, Mommy again. It was awesome. Then, we made this guy.

The Snow Dude

It’s a snow dude. Notice the snowhawk? That’s a snowman mohawk. He’s also got a grill, which isn’t so cool for real people, but works for snow dudes. We are pretty sure he is the coolest snowman to exist on this earth. Ever. As we were finishing him up, the snow turned to freezing rain, so we had to beat feet inside. Because freezing rain is cold. And it hurts. It did, however, put a nice finishing glaze on the snow dude, so I think he may be with us until July.

And after a very technical procedure which involved Dave’s hand, a sweeping motion and our internet satellite dish, our connection was restored this morning. And there was much rejoicing.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Valentine Treats

by Leslie

Julia and I made some Valentine treats for her Story Time friends and Kindermusik buddies today: Pink Heart-Shaped Rice Krispies Treats and Lollipop Flower Valentines. We found both of the ideas at FamilyFun.com. Here they are:

Valentine Treats

Julia was able to help a lot with both projects.

She added all the ingredients (except the food coloring, I did that) and stirred a lot to make the Rice Krispies Treats. She picked her favorite heart cookie cutter for the shape. I cut the hearts, she put them in the treat bag and I tied them shut. Of course, we did a lot of sampling. They’re delicious.

For the lollipop flowers, I cut out the shapes and she applied the stickers and glued the hearts to the lollipops. I helped with the leaves - they were a little small for her fingers to manipulate, but she still did most of the work with them.

We’ll be giving them out over the next few days, which will likely be the best part of the whole thing for Julia. She’s pretty excited to share them with her friends. She’s such a good girl!

Since we moved to the new house, we’ve been planning to personalize Julia’s bedroom by painting cool stuff on her walls. My mother had painted her original nursery in our old house to look like Pooh’s Hundred Acre Wood and it was really special. This time, we let Julia choose the theme (since last time it was a little hard to hear her requests through my belly). She wanted ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ and ‘Good Night Moon.’ We finally started the project on Saturday.

We began with a growth chart.

You can see some close ups here and here.

And then the cow jumping over the moon above her bed.

The Cow Jumped Over The Moon

We have more to do, but at least we got started. Julia loves it and I am so pleased. We had a lot of fun. Hopefully, we can finish it in the next few weekends.

Broken

The corpse.

If you’re a regular visitor here, you’ve seen this picture and you know the story. While I prefer to post pictures for the Photo Hunt that haven’t been published here before, this one deserves a second look. The destruction of Dave’s laptop was just too momentous; I couldn’t pass it up for this week’s theme: Broken.

We have a new bathtime ritual at our house. Right after getting undressed and before jumping in the tub, Julia reenacts scenes from the Once Upon A Potty video we’ve used to brainwash her watched together.

“This is Prudence. Prudence is a little girl,” Julia recites with perfect timing and inflection. She points to the parts of her body - the head for thinking, the bottom for sitting - mimicking the video with stunning accuracy. Once the performance is complete, she splashes in the bathtub while singing “The Potty Song” and a little “Rock and Roll All Night” by Kiss.

This morning, as Julia reached the end of her monologue I said, “You know that video pretty well.”

“Yep.”

“You were doing everything Prudence does, except for the part when she uses the potty. Julia, are you going to use the potty like Prudence?”

“No, Mommy. That’s just messy.”

The Quiz Show Quizzes are still active! Remember, the high scorer will receive a blog post in their honor and may choose whether I write a haiku, a review of their blog or about the topic of their choice.

Four readers have completed the entire group of quizzes -all of them female. Currently Faith holds the highest score of 428.

There were a few guys that took a couple of quizzes, but I have yet to see any of the men go the distance. Don’t worry guys. There is still time! The quizzes will be up through Sunday.
