The Circle Of Life
by Leslie
I love Yard Sales. And Garage Sales. Moving Sales and Tag Sales, too. I pretty much like anything where people haul out their old stuff for me to grab up at nearly 90% off the price they purchased it for. I particularly enjoy taking a fixed amount of cash – say $10 or $15 – and seeing what I can get for it. At the end of my spree, I love researching the regular price of each item and calculating just how much I saved by picking up the second-hand version. I don’t buy junk, mind you. The goods have to be in good shape – next to new or gently worn – so you can understand the challenge. And if you’re getting as excited by this as I am, well, we just might be made for each other.
Last weekend, I came across this:

I made it mine for twenty-five cents (that’s a saving of $7.74 and that’s not taking into account what I saved in shipping, which I would likely have had to pay because I purchase almost all of my books from Amazon.com).
I guess I’m feeling optimistic.
By the way, for those of you looking to add to your brood, What To Expect When The New Baby Comes Home is a great book and I recommend it highly, along with What To Expect When Mommy’s Having A Baby
– a book we bought earlier this year. I only wish they had What To Expect When Mommy Has A Miscarriage.
Anyway, my optimism turned to hope yesterday when, in the midst of a bout of uncontrollable sobbing over the beauty of my sleeping child, it hit me that I was late for some punctuation, if you know what I mean. If you don’t, I’m trying to tell you that I realized my period is late. Today, Jule-Buggy-Bug and I headed to Wal-Mart and purchased a pregnancy test. And some pads. (I didn’t want to jinx it.)
One test later….
The result is negative. Foiled again! You just wait uterus! I’ll get ya sooner or later! So, I figure I must be gearing up for a period that could rival the apocalypse. You may want to start praying for my husband. Julia, on the other hand, will never know the difference. She is in her own world where she is a member of The Go-Gos and they are putting on a concert.
Julia loves music and she demands to know who sings every song we listen to. She knows that Toto sings “Rosanna” and Chaka Kahn sings “I Feel For You” and that “Shake It Up” is by The Cars. Although, she thinks actual automobiles sing it. To show her that The Cars were just a music group, I pulled up a video on YouTube to show her who The Cars are. While we were uh-oh it’s magic-ing, I thought I’d show her the video to her new favorite song: “We Got The Beat.” I searched, I clicked and we waited for it to load. And the video began and Julia stared, mouth agape.
“Mom?”
“Yeah?”
“Are those The Go-Gos?”
“Yeah. See, there’s Belinda – she’s the singer. And there’s Jane…”
“Mom!”
“Yeah?”
“They’re ALL GIRLS!”
“Yeah.”
We had to watch it three more times and then she slipped off into the world where she plays a pink electric guitar and is putting on the world’s greatest concert. And she’s a princess. She couldn’t care less about my mood.
Now, I’m off to pool all my cash and find the Garage Sale section of my newspaper so I can map my sale route because tomorrow is a Saturday, a.k.a Sale-turday.
And just so you know, I have officially become my grandmother.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that your test WAS WRONG! You’re a great mommy to Julia and you so deserve more babies. I hope it happens soon for you.
The question is, just how late are you? Maybe it was too soon for the pregnancy test to show positive????
I agree with Karly. You are the kind of mom who deserves many more babies. Keep on ‘a tryin.
ps- I LOVE Rosanna! Toto is such an under-appreciated group…
Sorry. Keep trying (I’m sure Dave will agree with that).
The Go-Go’s were kinda cool back then. An all girls band to make it big was rare. I think I even went to one of their concerts, but don’t tell anyone.
Waaaaagh! Damn you pregnancy test! That’s just not right.
But I am hopeful for you that it is false negative and you are already incubating your second member of the NEW go-go’s!
I am really hopeful for you. Really, really, really.
I love garage sales more than anyone I know! I run a daycare out of my home so I look for nice inexpensive toys at garage sales. Then I’m not totally upset when things get broken. Another great place to find garage sales is craigslist. I’m so into garage sales that I actually make a plan to know which neighborhoods I’m hitting and what time to get there to get the best stuff. My husband thinks it’s a sickness!
Second comment (I’ve got a lot to say), I’m sorry for the negative. It took us almost 2 years to get pregnant with our second. I went from fertile myrtle with my first to frustration and tears with the second. After over a year of refusing fertility drugs I broke down and we went to see the specialist. He did an ultrasound just to make sure that I didn’t have tumors or anything and low and behold there was our second, right there on the screen, just a tiny kidney bean. I understand your frustration, I’ve been there! Just have faith that it will happen!
That book is great! We bought that one and a few more when we were expecting our NOW 3 year old. Yard sales used to be fun for me but around here people are trying to make money off of yard sales so you can’t touch anything. We go to goodwill instead and find quite a few good books and of course, junk. I just bought a bunch of books from Amazon from some free gift certificates I had.
Hey, btw, did you ever receive the book package from me and the t-shirt from the sponsor? Just wondering…
The tears over a sleeping baby tell me #2 is on the way. She’s hovering over you guys watching. She’ll jump into place soon. Or, should I say “he?”
I don’t know if I dare send you this link. Oh well, here it is:

Made me tear up.
[...] My mom and I loaded up the girls and hit some yard sales on Saturday, because you know I love me some yard sales. Finding quality items at rock bottom prices – Hello Baby Gap overalls for $1.00! – I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday. [...]
I’ve got three kids. The two older ones are girls and we are surrounded by “Abercrombie wearers”. I constantly have my eyes open for lightly used deals. Just a tip, they sell well in lots on eBay too!
