My friend SusieJ posted recently about making sock monkeys and suggested them as just one of her thirteen alternatives to toxic toys for Christmas. And I thought, “Sock monkeys! Brilliant!”

So, my mother and I have been all about making sock monkeys. Actually, my mom has been all about the making part. My contribution to the project was, “Hey! I think we should make some sock monkeys for Christmas. Here are some socks.”

Check out our Funky Sock Monkeys 1.0:

Red and White Funky Sock Monkey Little Brown Funky Sock Monkey

Yellow and Gray Funky Sock Monkey

What do you think? We’ve been experimenting with different kinds of socks. I think the red and white monkey is my favorite, so far.

We’ve told Julia that Santa hired Grandma to help him out by making sock monkeys this year as Dave Santa himself will be delivering some to the playgroup kids at our Christmas party. Julia has been absolutely THRILLED with this idea. She’s taken on the very important job of choosing the button eyes for each monkey and feels proud to be a legitimate Christmas elf. She likes to talk about the children who will receive the sock monkeys saying things like, “I think this one should be for a girl with brown hair,” or “The little boy who gets this monkey is gonna love him so much!”

It’s fun to see her get so excited about the giving part of Christmas and to find so much joy in something homemade.

What are you giving for Christmas this year?

The red/white one is definitely my FAVORITE. I love what you told your daughter about Santa and your Mom. What a way to build some confidence! And, how she thinks about how much he will love this monkey. And I love your contribution — that would be mine.

    I’m not sure what I’m giving yet….

  5. Mommy on December 3, 2007 11:01 am

Mackey – Absolutely! You have my address, right? I’ll pay for the shipping back to you – don’t worry about that. I’m so excited! It’ll be fun!

LOVE the candy cane one–too cute!

And I had to rush over and reconfirm what you said, that it wasn’t intended for you (my post) :)

I’m terribly absent minded anyway and even when people do those kinds of things I’ll usually forget who did what withing half a day. :)

Love the striped one… and pink with brown is always cute. Those are awesome, Leslie!

  8. Pam on December 3, 2007 4:38 pm

Cute x’s infinity!!! Love the red and white striped one.
Yeah, I’d like to order one too. I know of a cute little boy (not Braden) who would LOVE one and his Mom is freaking out a little about the lead thing. She’d love something handmade.
Can I write you a check for a million dollars?

Dang! Another crafty person who is setting the bar too high! Thanks a lot! I’m a crafting loser. I just gave my sewing machine to my Mother in Law because it has been sitting in the closet for 10 years!

I must say…I just love the one with pink feet!

Those are AWESOME! I like the red and white one best too. You are so talented and may I say that Julia is picking the exact right button eyes for the beasts.

  15. Amanda on December 4, 2007 12:35 pm

Wow. Those are adorable. You need a site to sell sock monkeys. Your gonna be rich! I love them!

  16. Karly on December 4, 2007 6:29 pm

I love your contribution to the whole thing. Sounds like it was hard work, and I’m glad you persevered and gave your mom those socks.

Now, where is MY sock monkey? Cuz those are CAH-UTE.

  17. Daddy Forever on December 5, 2007 2:16 am

  21. Gunfighter on December 12, 2007 6:45 am

…and did no one else get the Beastie Boys reference? Or am I the only idiot that laughed aloud at it?

[...] I might pop in and out, but you just never know. So, I leave you with some great, interesting reads: Brush up on your photography skills here. I hope you’ve signed up and are ready to go. If you don’t have a blog, that’s OK — you can still do this. The Angry Chicken is completely amazing. Every time I stop by, my jaw hangs open. And here’s a long tail to ponder. Scribbit, as always, is just on top of EVERYTHING. And here is a nicely done Gingerbread House. And congratulations to you, and thanks for the laughs! And I think her sock monkeys turned out very cool. [...]

Okay, way out of my craft league. I am having trouble getting 2 buttons sewn on my jacket. I walk around looking like a bag lady…

But the are very cute. What was the response from playgroup? And you even got Gunfighter in on the action!! You are WAY COOL!!
