Julia actually took a nap today. A NAP!
Alright, it isn’t as WOOOHOOO!!! as it sounds because she’s not feeling well. But that didn’t stop me from drooling and convulsing over the prospect of a little time all by myself. My mind was frantic - what would I do? Finish off my mile long to-do list? Nah. I grabbed my iPod and headed to the bathroom with the big mirror to put on a pretend concert.
(Note to self: D’yer Maker by Led Zeppelin would be a great choice of music for a striptease for Dave. Your moves are hot, Lady!)
I’ve been dreaming of being a rock star in front of my mirror for as far back as I can remember. There was even a time, around 1984 when Tina Turner’s What’s Love Got To Do With It was a huge hit, that I was bold enough to take it to the streets.
That song was my fake performance song of choice back then and I was totally into it. I’d make my hair all big, put on my denim jacket and plastic princess high-heeled shoes and prance around my room with my Mr. Microphone to that song. And I, in my eight-year old mind, was Tina Turner. Except I didn’t have a black leather skirt like she did in the video. I begged my Mom to get me that skirt to complete the look, but she just wouldn’t do it.
No matter. I found the article of my obsession at a yard sale one sunny Saturday morning for only 50 cents. Being that I had two shiny quarters of my very own, my Mom was hard-pressed to stop me from making that purchase. She simply said, “You can wear it for dress up and dress up only.”
I agreed.
The ride home that day was one of the longest of my life. My Mom barely had the car in park before I was out the door and into my room to jump into my denim jacket, high-heels and that hot, new leather skirt. I made my hair all big, grabbed my boom box and paraded up and down my block with Tina’s hit single blaring from the speakers for at least four song plays. I spent the rest of the day engaged in a heated debate about whether or not parading up and down the block in my black leather skirt was a violation of the “dress up only” rule.
The leather skirt doesn’t fit anymore and I’ve since become an exclusive “bathroom only” performer, but I’ll tell you, at 31, it’s still just as fun.

9 Cool Kids Came To Play

Next time I expect a video tape.
I would say that I hope Julia is feeling better soon, but we both know what that would do to the nap situation.
OMG Leslie (relation to your comment on my blog) ” We call lesbians Leslie”. I honestly think that a bit of pee leaked out when I read that. Way way too funny. Now I must go read your post. Hey, if you want to contribute to mommyscupboard, cause you know you have nothing else to do, let me know via e-mail. I’d need your email to sign you up and I think I deleted your last one. kristian@theelephantroom.ca.
Ok, I love the image of an 8 year old prancing around like Tina Turner. I personally thought that I was Debbie Gibson and used to sing Out of the Blue at the school Lipsync contests. Oh and I also did a rendition of Walk Like an Egyptian (literally walking like an egyptian for the entire 3 minutes). Oh, nevermind the hair, you forgot to mention that your a white girl Leslie.
One of the nice things about having kids is that you can rock out with them and everyone will think you are a cool mom. You don’t even need to wait for the kids take a nap. They’ll join in the fun.
A NAP!!! And yes, that is a woo hoo moment.
Rock on Sistah!
D’yer Mak’er is one of the best s-e-x songs of all time. You have excellent music/strip tease taste.
I LOVE that song. Did you know it works on babies too? For a while, Led Zeppelin was the only thing that calmed a fussy baby Ironflower.
And your whole bathroom concert idea is awesome. I think this explains why you are such a positive person.
No, Leslie, I salute YOU! (I totally agree with Karly that there should be video next time. )
I had so many songs that I performed to when I was a kid… All I Need is a Miracle by Mike and the Mechanics is the one that sticks out first and foremost. My friend and I were determined to go all the way to Star Search with our moves to that sweet song.
