It is 4 a.m. on the day of Julia’s 5th birthday party. I just finished her cake. This means I have been up all night working on it. And here it is.

I know. I KNOW. It has a lot of problems. I’m not even going to discuss them, because it is finished. FINISHED!
I would be embarrassed to tell you that it took me sixteen hours to make it, but I think that doing anything for a whole sixteen hours in a row is kind of an accomplishment. Or a sign of insanity.
It looks nothing like the cake I had planned. It turns out that I have a lot to learn about fondant. Also, our air conditioning failed and I discovered that everything I ever knew about buttercream frosting had changed, so this cake is kind of an against all odds sort of miracle confection.
It actually looks good from far away and, hopefully, in the eyes of my five year old.

Oh my god. You have MAD skills. I love it.
Thanks. If you check out all the tinkerbell cakes on Flickr, however, you’ll see that my skills aren’t nearly as mad as you might think.
I think it looks amazing!
Thanks!
Oh, I wouldn’t mind to take a look from close up and have a piece as well. It looks fabulous!
Thanks! It tasted alright, too.
Problems? What problems? It’s marvelous!
I would tell you about the problems, particularly about the bows at the bottom, but it would require a bottle of Xanax and a long and disturbing backstory about horses.
Leslie, I think that it looks great. Aaron said he wants to eat some of the green part. You know how he feels about green!
Did he get a green piece? I think he did. I thought it tasted okay. I actually ate waaaay too much of it.
I was actually sort of proud of my son’s transformers cake for today until I saw this. I suck. Really, compared to yours, mine looks like a child made it.
Next year I’m either hiring you or you need to start a caking how to website.
I’m not sure I could make a go of a cake-making business. It took me 16 hours to make this one. My rate would be out of this world!
It’s absolutely gorgeous and Julia will LOVE it! Well done.
Thank you! Julia really did love it. She was so excited. I wish I’d taken her picture when she saw it the next morning. It was all I needed to make it a worthwhile endeavor.
Oh my goodness, Leslie - you have MAD SKILLZ with this baking thing! Are you nuts? Of COURSE she’ll love it. And have you ever watched Ace of Cakes on Food Network? They are always talking about the difficulty of dealing with fondant and hot weather.
Wow! Wow! Wow!
Thank you! I’ve never watched Ace of Cakes. It seems I should have, because I didn’t know nearly enough about fondant. My next one will be much better. This one, however, was enough to make Julia feel special, and that’s what I was hoping for.
I saw it in Flickr before I read your post, and I thought “Surely she didn’t make that?” Incredible! It is wonderful! And while she would probably love anything you made right now, when she has kids and looks back on this picture and realizes the work you put into it, that’s when she’s REALLY going to love it. And want to kill you because you set the bar so high.
Ha ha!
She really did love it. And I’m proud of it, in spite of the mistakes.
Problems? Embarrassed?! It is magnificent!!!
Thank you! It didn’t turn out bad. I set my expectations a little high, especially for my first go at fondant.
THIS CAKE IS AWESOME! I do know how you feel, too. I’ve been making my nieces’ and nephews’ birthday cakes since they were 2 and I always feel like the cakes aren’t as good as I had hoped they would be. But those sweet kids have never once failed to be absolutely thrilled with their cake. I’m sure Julia will love hers, too. Oh yeah. And fondant is a B-I-T-C-H!
Thanks! You totally get me! I think it’s hard not to notice the mistakes when you made the cake. And no one else knows what you were trying to achieve, they just know how it turned out. So when they say, “It looks great,” I think Pshaw! If this is great, you should have seen the cake I was trying to make!
TOTALLY RAD!!!
Oh, thanks!
I’m beyond impressed. I don’t know jack about fondant. Even how to say it correctly. You rock.
Thank you.
I’m pretty sure I mispronounce fondant, which totally makes me think of Sixteen Candles.
“It’s a quiche.”
“How do you spell?”
“You don’t spell it, you eat it!”
Are you Wonder Woman in disguise?? “Leslie” is just your everyday, mild-mannered mom alter ego, right?
The cake is wicked cool
I don’t even know what to say, except that I love this comment.
Wow! You should be VERY PROUD!!!! Great job and I’m sure it will be the hit of the party
Thanks! Everyone seemed to like it, which I’m going to assume is because it was AWESOME and not because I made such a huge freakin’ deal out of it.
Give yourself more credit - it looks fab! And I don’t have to say that - but I will becuase it’s true!!!!! Happy birthday!!!!
Thanks! I’ll think it’s fabulous a year from now when I look back and have forgotten all the mistakes I made.
it looks fantastic! I knew what it was supposed to be and EVERYTHING!! Be proud of yourself, you did an awesome job.
Thanks! I worked hard on it, although a lot of the work was created from my own screw ups. But, you live and you learn. My next fondant cake is gonna totally kick ass.
Wow!! Great job. I bet it was yummy.
It was really yummy. I’ve got two extra pounds of proof on my butt.
Um. Holy Crap! I mean, Holy Cake! I can’t imagine myself ever thinking I could take on a cake decoration like this. You are officially forgiven from missing haiku.
Hey, if I can do it, anyone can do it.
Oh my gosh, I can’t believe you MADE that! That totally looks like a professional cake! Seriously, Leslie, that is AWESOME.
It’s the fondant. It’s all polished and what not. If I can master fondant, I just might be a cake rock star.
That cake looks awesome and I don’t see any problems. I hope Julia had a great birthday party!
Aw, thanks. Julia had THE BEST birthday party. It was tons of fun!
What problems?? I see no problems… I see one kick-ass Tinkerbell cake! That is amazing. You should be frickin proud. If I made that, it would be my Facebook profile picture for a year.
I was thinking about a shirt or something. Maybe, “I make cakes that can kick your ass.”
I really am proud of that cake, especially now, a few days later, when I’ve forgotten a few of the mistakes I was obsessing about before.
I will be 28 in March and love Hello Kitty- can I pay you to ship an amazing cake to California?? This is beautiful!
