Everyone’s done this project. It isn’t new.
Put some water in jars.
Add some food coloring.
Stick a fresh cut flower or even celery in there. (We used Queen Anne’s Lace because it’s lovely and free in our yard.)
Ask, “What do you think will happen?” And then wait…
…a few hours…
…a few days…
…and one more day.
The flowers drew the water up from their roots through their capillaries. By coloring the water, we could see the process.
Science. It’s so cool.
It sparked a valuable conversation about how what we take in effects us. I’m still thinking a lot about that.
