Did you know there is more to My Mommy’s Place than this blog? Yes! There is!

My Mommy’s Place was launched in April of 2006. (The blog was added to it a few months later.) My dream for this website has been to create a place for moms to come together to gain and share knowledge, because it is my belief that a mom’s greatest resource is another mom, and every mother has something valuable to share.

My blog has been a great way to give visitors a view of motherhood, but it is a limited view. It is my view. This year, I’d like to broaden it with “This is Motherhood,” a monthly column that will appear on the My Mommy’s Place home page. Each month I will provide a spotlight to a different mother. Maybe you! Are you interested?

If you are, all you need to do is write a column describing your motherhood experience. I don’t want to limit you, but if you’d like a suggestion, I’d encourage you to write somewhere around 800 words. Be sure to include a byline, where you can feel free to include links to your blog, website or business. Then, e-mail your submission, along with a photo (if it’s on Flickr or something like that, you can just include the url), to me at admin (at) mymommysplace.com. There are 12 spots open - one for each month in 2008. If there is a month you’d prefer for your feature, let me know in your e-mail.

Click here for an idea of what it will look like.

In addition to pretty much owning my home page for a month, I’ll dedicate space to you in the sidebar of this blog. (See where the heading, “You like me! …Right?” is? I’ll be changing it to “This is Motherhood” and I’ll be plugging you there your entire spotlight month.)

I wanted to offer this space up to you all - my blog readers - first, because I value your perspective; I care about what you have to say. I suspect My Mommy’s Place visitors will, too.

If you’re a Dad or a Grandparent - you can join in, too. How about submitting a guest column for A Daddy’s View or A Grandma’s Heart?

If you’d like to be a part of My Mommy’s Place, but don’t feel comfortable contributing in these ways, I’m also looking for photos to feature monthly as Photos of the Month. Submit one of those!

I’d love to set the year up as quickly as possible. I’ve got a baby coming in April, ya know! I’d like to have the columns ready to roll early. So, get writing! I hope to hear from you soon!

My blogging soulmate Karly from Wiping Up Snot was offering up interviews, so I jumped at the chance to answer her burning questions. Here they are along with my answers.

1. If you could be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, which one would you be and why?

Leonardo. I took a quiz at QuizFarm.com that told me this:

You scored as Leonardo. You need to relax and realize that life should be fun as well as orderly. Your organization and willingness to be perfect will help you along the way, but sometimes you can be very annoying to others.

Yeah, that fits me.

2. What is your earliest memory?

My earliest memory is from around age 3 1/2. My mom was helping me into my snowsuit to go outside and play in the snow. It’s isn’t a long memory - I don’t really remember the playing in the snow part, but I remember getting ready, probably because I was so excited.

3. How did you come up with the name of your blog/website?

I created my website in hopes of bringing moms together to share advice, ideas and stories in those few moments they had to themselves. My working title for it was Mommy Moments.

My First Banner

When it came time to buy a domain, Mommy Moments was taken. I knew I wanted a new name with ‘Mommy’ in it and I wanted a trademark that people could come to recognize. All along, I referred to my website as ‘My Place.’ Once I created my trademark - a sketch of Julia’s baby face - it became My Mommy’s Place.

4. If one day the world was taken over by an evil man who decided that women could wear only shoes or carry a handbag, which would you choose? Would you rather be purseless or shoeless? For the rest of time.

I think I’d have to go with shoes, then I’d organize all of the other shoe-wearing women to beat that evil man down with them.

5. Does Julia take after you or Dave more? In what ways?

Well, she talks and talks and talks and talks and talks - like me, but she’s got Dave’s sense of humor.

Dave and Julia being funny.

Julia is a wonderful blend of the best of Dave and me. She’s from the man that makes me feel like a natural woman and she has the parts of me that I like best about myself, and that makes her the most likeable individual on the earth in my book.

Wanna keep this going? Leave a comment asking me to interview you and I’ll come up with questions just for you, just like Karly did for me. Once you post your interview, let me know and I’ll lovingly link you up.

This month, at My Mommy’s Place, our focus is on balance and I’d like to hear your thoughts. Here are a few questions to get you thinking:

*What does balance mean to you?
*How do you achieve balance? Do you have any helpful tips or resources to share?
*What prevents you from achieving balance?
*What does a balanced life look like?
*Balance in parenthood - is it possible?

Submit a comment to this post or at My Mommy’s Group for a chance to win The Motherhood Manifesto Documentary Film on DVD!!!

Be as creative as you like. Share your thoughts in words, pictures, poetry - anything that articulates your thoughts on balance. Bloggers, feel free to submit your links via comments if you feel inspired to publish a post on the subject and please pass the word along!

The giveaway begins today and runs through April 30th. Ten participants will be randomly selected to receive the documentary. Winners will be notified via e-mail and announced here on May 1st.

Balance - let’s talk about it!

Happiness is…

There’s still time to enter the Happiness Giveway. Click here to see how My Mommy’s Place visitors define happiness.

What is happiness for you?

It’s the first of the month and what does that mean? Site updates, baby.

They’re natural. They’re chemical. They’re logical. Habitual. They’re sensual. But most of all, checking out the site update is something you should do. The site update is out there for me and you. Checking the site update is natural, and it’s good. Not everybody does it, but everybody should. The site update is natural and it’s fun. The site update is best when you click on one.

Go here. Click around. There’s a freakin sweet giveaway. Can you finish the sentence, “Happiness is…” ? If you can, you might win a $20 Amazon.com Gift Certificate. Go on and check stuff out.

Finally, a joke:

Knock. Knock.

(Who’s there?)

Tired.

(Tired who?)

Zzzzzzzz……

The fabulous Faith from SpiderWeb Dreams was the winner of The Quiz Show Quizzes, adding weight to my surmisal that we were best friends in a former life. Her prize: a haiku. Here it is.

A girl that has rats
And anti-resolutions
I’m caught in her web

I’ve heard people say that blogs are like conversations. If any blog I read is like that, it is Faith’s. Her writing feels like it’s coming straight from her heart and onto my screen. When I click over to her site, I feel like I’m opening a letter written just for me - a letter that would begin, “Dear Friend.” If you haven’t visited Faith before, click on over today and get caught in her spiderweb for a while, too.

Then, be sure to check out the Mom Idol Singing Contest! Yes! An on-line singing contest for moms! My Mommy’s Place is a sponsor - how could we not be? We’re offering up a mug, a tote bag and an iTunes giftcard, but that’s not all - there are tons of other great sponsors offering prizes I know you’ll want to win. Prizes will be awarded to some of the best and some of the worst singers, and if you’re not one of those, you still have a chance to win the random drawing! So, click the link to learn how to enter. You know I’ll be entering. In fact, I could use your help! I don’t know what to sing! Click here to vote on the song I should record and enter into the contest. I’ll keep the poll up for a week and announce the song you chose next Friday, February 23rd and that’s the one I’ll enter into the contest.

February 1st has come and gone. Have you been to My Mommy’s Place to see what’s new?

Please, go now.

Make sure you enter the contest! You can win a mug and one item of your choice from Sweetie Pie Hats - your source for custom embroidery for the whole family! All you need to do is share a story of love.

And if you feel like you have even more to share, consider submitting something else for publication at My Mommy’s Place. You can do it. I believe in you.

I also believe that life is kicking my butt right now. Last week was rough. The family got sick. It was All About The 80s week. And it was time to launch my monthly updates at My Mommy’s Place. And there was other stuff. What it all added up to was that I was tired. Depleted. Almost completely drained of my life force.

Then, I found something. I was searching for the song “The New Style” by The Beastie Boys on YouTube for my All About The 80s music post and I found this.

(And just a little backstory here: I was all about the album License to Ill in the 80s. I had convinced my grandma to buy it for me - after my mother had already told me NO! YOU CANNOT HAVE IT! - so I treasured it for many reasons. “The New Style” was one of my favorite songs.)

I didn’t include this in my 80s music post, because it isn’t an actual Beastie Boys video. It is something far greater.

Sometimes, when you’re at your lowest, God sends a rainbow that ends right at your heart and reaffirms your belief that life is good. This was my rainbow. Check it out. Probably without your kids. My mom didn’t tell me I couldn’t have it for no reason.

If you haven’t clicked on over to My Mommy’s Place yet this month, you’re really missing out.

And if you have, but not in the last week, there’s somethng new you must check out: An Interview With Work-At-Home Mom Amanda Compton (She’s the brains behind Contests for Mom, Home Jobs For Moms, and A Mom’s Review, just to name a few sites.) Get the scoop on what being a work-at-home-mom is really like. You just may find it’s for you!

Finally, make sure you enter our ReNew Year’s Giveaway for a chance to win “The Yummy Mummy” by Polly Wiliams (read my review here) - a sleek hard-cover version, not some flimsy paperback.

So clickety-click! It’s fun.

People, I am tired.

Better make that a capital T. Tired.

Tired.

Still, I had to let you know that there’s lots of cool new stuff at My Mommy’s Place.

So, go there. Read the nifty articles. Enter the kick-ass giveaway to win our book of the month that just happens to ROCK.

Start the new year off right.
